The Myth, The Migration, The Madness
The Tarpon Migration
A 4-part guide to one of the most iconic migrations in the saltwater world.
It Begins
I. The Push South
As spring warms the water, adult tarpon begin their northward migration from tropical overwintering zones. Drawn by rising temperatures and shifting tides, they push toward the Florida Keys and Boca Grande, where the pre-spawn staging begins.

II. Offshore Spawning
Each summer, mature tarpon leave the flats and push miles offshore to spawn beneath the cover of night. In synchronized bursts timed with lunar cycles, they release millions of eggs into the open ocean — a high-stakes ritual that has shaped the species for millennia. Once complete, they start heading north to return to their inshore waters.
Warming Waters
III. Ghosts on the Current
Newly hatched tarpon larvae, called leptocephali, drift invisibly on ocean currents — fragile, translucent passengers in the Gulf Stream. Their journey is passive, yet essential, as they ride the tides toward sheltered coastal nurseries.
Peak Season
IV. Mangrove Nurseries
Juvenile tarpon find refuge in backwater mangroves and brackish creeks, where predators are scarce and food is plentiful. These hidden estuaries are where silver kings grow their armor and instincts before heading out to sea.
